Wind Sand and Stars
Lencois Maranhenses Sand Dunes, Brazil.
My lonely little campsite in the middle of the dunes. I had unusually clear weather on this last trip which allowed me to enjoy the spectacular night skies. The dunes are only a couple degrees from the equator, so from one place I could see the southern cross, the big dipper and I could almost see the north star all in one sweep of the sky!
'Wind Sand and Stars' is the title of a beautifully written book about flying across the dunes of the Sahara in the 1930's. Passages from the book would occassionally go through my mind as I stood and enjoyed the vast silence.
