Ghost

The Great Gallery, Canyonlands National Park, Utah.

'The Ghost', a sinister appearing figure in 'The Great Gallery' panel in Canyonlands National Park glows in amber light under a starlit sky.

The lonely figures of this panel have been guarding the remote upper reaches of Horseshoe Canyon for over 4,000 years. They are thought to be as old as the great pyramids of Giza, painted on this wall when human civilization was in it's infancy.

I sat down in the silence of the starlight, unchanged for millenia, my mind wandering, questioning, and curious about the people that created these enduring sentinels of the southwest. I left without any answers.  Their secrets intact, I turned away and the ephemeral ghosts were left alone again to guard the emptiness. Photo © copyright by Michael Anderson.
