Another World

The full moon shines over the otherworldly landscape of Lencois Maranhenses, Brazil. This is one of my favorite places in the world. It's an incredibly unique area of tropical white sand dunes and crystalline lakes that is mostly unknown to the world, including most native Brasileiros. Camping and trekking through the emptiness of the dunes is a world class adventure and there are very few people who do it. From a photography perspective, it's an endless canvas of opportunity for creative compositions. The easiest way to get there is by plane to Sao Luis in Maranhao State, then by bus/jeep to either Santo Amaro or Barreirinhas. The sand begin on the outskirts of those towns. It's possible to trek across the dunes in 3-4 days if you are fit and prepared and proficient in cross country travel.
